4 Classic Rum Recipes

Here at Thunder Road, we may be known for our whiskey and moonshine — but we make more than just that. We offer several other spirits distilled on site at our Kodak, Tennessee distillery, including vodka, rye, gin, and of course, rum. Our rum is a customer favorite, and between our three different rum spirits, there’s a flavor for everyone. Our classic Original Renegade Rum, a 92-proof silver rum, is handcrafted from molasses by our head distiller. Our Barreled Renegade Rum is aged, giving it the time it needs to infuse the character, color, and flavor of the wooden barrels. Finally, our Coconut Rum has a rich, artisan coconut flavor that is perfect for mixing or sipping. Either way, you can’t go wrong with our rum. Here are a few of our favorite classic cocktails incorporating our rums:

1. Dark and Stormy
The Dark and Stormy is the national drink of Bermuda, but it’s wildly popular in the States as well. And with only a few ingredients, it’s super simple to make — you just need to find the right balance between the rum and ginger beer.

● 2 oz. Barreled Renegade Rum
● 3 oz. ginger beer
● Dash of lime juice (optional)
Combine the rum, ginger beer, and optional lime juice in a tall glass with ice cubes. Garnish with a lime wedge.

2. Strawberry Mojito
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a refreshing, fruity drink. Our strawberry mojito is the perfect mix of strawberry and mint.

● 2 oz. Renegade Rum
● 2 Medium Fresh Strawberries
● 2-3 Sprigs of Mint
● 1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
● 2 oz. Club Soda
Muddle fresh strawberry and mint with Renegade Rum. Add simple syrup and club soda. Shake well and strain over ice. Garnish with strawberry, lime, and mint sprig.

3. Rum Old Fashioned
We love a good traditional Old Fashioned, but aged rum gives a new twist to the classic cocktail.

● 3 oz. Barreled Renegade Rum
● 3 dashes orange bitters
● 1 sugar cube
● 1 large ice cube
● 1 orange peel (optional)
Muddle the sugar cube with the orange bitters in a rocks glass. Add the aged rum and stir. Then, add the ice cube and stir.

4. Mai Tai
When you think about a Mai Tai, the first thing that pops in your head is probably the beach. This fruity cocktail is perfectly paired with sand, sun….and Thunder Road Coconut Rum.

● 1 oz. Thunder Road Coconut Rum
● .5 oz. orange liqueur
● .5 oz. lime juice
● .5 oz. almond syrup
Pour coconut rum, orange liqueur, almond syrup, and lime juice into a shaker. Shake and pour into a tall glass with ice.

Whether you’re enjoying a coconut rum cocktail in the summer heat or sipping on a hearty spiced rum drink in the winter, rum is a spirit that can be enjoyed year-round. What’s your favorite rum cocktail?
